Foot Washing. Following the homily, the priest removes his chasuble, and proceeds to wash feet following the example of Jesus. In this powerful gesture, an optional rite of the Holy Thursday Mass, the priest imitates the One who came not to be served but to serve.
Keeping vigil with Jesus. At the end of the Holy Thursday liturgy, in which we remember the institution of the Eucharist by Jesus Christ at the Last Supper, as well as Christ's institution of the sacred priesthood, we solemnly process with the Blessed Sacrament to the altar of repose, a space set aside for quiet prayer with the Eucharistic King. The presence of Jesus Christ, body, blood, and soul and divinity, within the Blessed Sacrament is a fundamental Catholic belief. The procession is in remembrance of Jesus' journey from the Upper Room to the Mount of Olives. We are asked to spend an hour with Him, adoring Him in the Blessed Sacrament. Jesus asked His disciples when He found them asleep, "Could you not even wait an hour with Me". We are asked to leave the church in silence.
There is no closing to the Holy Thursday Mass, no opening or closing of the Good Friday service, or opening of the Easter Vigil, because Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the easter Vigil are all one continuous service.
